Norwegian Forest Cat

The Norwegian Forest Cat's appearance is due not to human breeding guidance, but a natural adaptation to the arctic climate of the cat's native home of Norway.

Having a thick double-layered coat to protect them from the harsh climate in Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat is similar in appearance to the Maine Coon of the United States.

Norwegian Forest Cats grow to be quite large, female cats range from 7 to 11 pounds, while males can grow up to 22 pounds in size.

Norwegian Forest Cat breeders are found across the United States, Europe, and other countries.

In Europe the Norwegian is also known as 'skogkatter' or 'skaukatt.' 'Norsk skogkatt' translates as "Norwegian Forest Cat."

Some breeders and cat lovers in the United States refer to the Norwegian as a "Wegie," an abbreviated version of "Norwegian."

Norwegian Forest Cat Traits

Norwegian Forest Cats enjoy hunting and the outdoors, interact well and are playful with humans, and like to climb.

In addition to a thick fluffy coat, some other physical characteristics of Norwegian cats are tufted ears and a long bushy tail.

Norwegian Forest Cats are found in a wide variety of colors.
